Emergency

What's this about?

Imagine being the first person to arrive at the scene of a serious car accident? Could you stay calm in this challenging situation? Would you like to protect and help the public?

There are lots of different roles in the emergency services from being a dog handler for the police, a paramedic, or working as a firefighter.

There are many opportunities for both school leavers and graduates in the emergency services and prospects for training and progression are good.

Many roles require shift work, as emergencies can happen at any time. Employment is usually on a local basis, so you’ll need to find out about job opportunities from the organisation that is responsible for delivering the emergency service that interests you in the area where you hope to work.

In recent years, there has been a growth in the number of relevant degrees such as Paramedic Science and Police Studies at the same time the emergency services are often preferring to recruit graduates.

It can be difficult to get into these careers at 18 as you may need more experience of working with the public.
