What's it all about?

You’ll aim to channel healing energy around your client's body. This is intended to help them feel calm, relaxed and have a better sense of wellbeing.

Treatment sessions usually last 1 to 2 hours.

During a session you’ll:

  • explain the process
  • take a medical history from the client
  • make sure the client is comfortable
  • place your hands in a sequence of positions covering the whole body, to guide energy and activate the healing process
You won’t diagnose medical conditions or advise clients on symptoms or treatments.

You’ll need to follow one of these routes:

  • do a college course
  • train with a Reiki master
Experience of working in a caring profession, or experience and qualifications in anatomy and physiology might be helpful.

It takes at least 3 years of training to gain full Reiki master status. You’ll be expected to have practised Reiki regularly on yourself and others during this time.

There are different systems of Reiki. The Reiki Association and UK Reiki Federation have more information on Reiki training, the different systems, and becoming a Reiki healer.

Self-employed Reiki healers usually charge £25 to £70 an hour.

These figures are a guide.

You’ll usually be self-employed and may have to offer evening and weekend appointments to meet the needs of your clients.

You’ll work from home, or from treatment rooms at an alternative therapy clinic.
With qualifications and experience, you could go on to offer training in Reiki healing.

You could also offer other forms of complementary therapies like massage, aromatherapy, or reflexology.
