What's it all about?

You’ll help people with psychological and physical conditions, like:

  • anxiety
  • lack of confidence
  • panic attacks
  • phobias
  • sleep problems
  • stress-related physical conditions
  • unwanted habits, like smoking or overeating

You’ll bring about a state of deep relaxation in your clients, and then make suggestions to their subconscious mind to help them change negative patterns of behaviour and thinking.

Your day-to-day duties could include:

  • setting up meetings with clients
  • discussing your clients’ medical and social history
  • suggesting courses of treatment
  • putting your client into a hypnotic trance
  • making positive suggestions and statements
  • taking notes and writing reports on progress

You could combine hypnotherapy with other types of psychotherapy and counselling methods.

There are no set entry requirements, but it may be useful to have a background in health care or counselling.

You could take a qualification recognised by one of the professional bodies associated with hypnotherapy, like:

Some hypnotherapy courses are at postgraduate level and are aimed at qualified psychologists or healthcare professionals.

You’ll usually be self employed. 

Your income will depend on the hours you work and the number of clients you see. 



You’ll usually charge £40 to £100 an hour.

You could work from home, or from rooms in a shared practice, hospital or clinic.
