Day to day tasks

As a plant hire adviser, you may:

  • take customer orders and give rental quotes
  • show customers how to operate equipment safely
  • advise customers on which equipment is best for their needs
  • put orders together and organise deliveries
  • take payments
  • monitor stock levels
  • arrange regular safety checks on equipment with mechanics
  • keep hire records up to date
  • answer customer questions face to face, over the phone or online

Working environment

You may need to wear a uniform.

You could work at a store, in a contact centre or on a construction site.

Your working environment may be outdoors some of the time.

Entry requirements

There are no set entry requirements but it may help you to get in if you have:

  • some GCSEs, usually including English and maths, or equivalent, for an intermediate apprenticeship

Employers usually look for experience in construction, warehousing or retail. Strong customer service and administration skills will also be helpful.

  • have forklift truck driver training for some jobs
  • have a category C1 or C LGV licence if driving mobile cranes on public roads
  • have a first aid certificate
