Arborist Tree Cutter Apprenticeship

The Arborist Tree Cutter is part of a highly skilled team that works at height. You will use your newly acquired knowledge and practical skills to make sure that trees and vegetation are kept away from overhead lines and equipment. Working with safety at the forefront of all activities, you will work with your team to evaluate, prepare and carry out tree cutting works on a variety of sites.

The apprenticeship can take 2 to 2.5 years depending on your programme and is centred on work-based learning, training linked directly to the job and academic study at College. By the end of the programme you'll have gained valuable on-the job experience, learned new skills and gained an industry recognised qualification, enabling you to have the opportunity to build a rewarding and successful career in the energy sector and contributing to the delivery of net zero.

Support with your application

We want to attract the best apprentices to SSE – committed, driven people with the right strengths and attitude. These matter more to us than your school grades or academic qualifications. That’s why there are no minimum grades required for most of our Apprenticeship programmes. To discuss your application in more detail and support with any reasonable adjustments to the application process then please contact apprenticesandtrainees@sse.com

How we recruit

We have a four-stage selection process that helps us both find out if this is the right move for you.

1. Online application

Submit an online application ahead of the vacancy closing date. We’ll ask you to tell us a bit about yourself. It’s that simple.

2. Online Test

Next, you will be asked to complete a selection of online tests to help us understand your fit to an Apprentice or Trainee role at SSE. We know you are unlikely to have much (if any) work experience at this stage, so don’t worry – the assessment process focuses on looking at potential and fit for the role you have applied to rather than looking for experience. Specifically, you will be asked to complete an assessment that is behaviour-based (i.e., asks you about what sorts of behaviours are most like you). The assessment also includes an ability component (i.e., focusing on how you work with different kinds of information). If you’d like to get a feel for what’s involved, here are some practice tests. If you need any adjustments to complete these tests, please email us at apprenticesandtrainees@sse.com before you do them and we’ll be happy to help.

3. Video interview

If you’re successful in our online test stage, you’ll be progressed to an online video interview. You can do this at a time that suits you best. A video interview is a great opportunity to really sell yourself, but you may feel a little out of your comfort zone. If so, here are some tips:

  • Find somewhere quiet where you won’t get distracted. Be sure to switch your phone to silent.
  • Prepare properly. Make sure your surroundings are neat and well-lit, and you have a reliable internet connection. Test your audio and webcam in plenty of time ahead of the interview.
  • Practice, practice, practice (it really does make perfect). You’ll have the chance to rehearse your responses before recording, so make the most of this. It’ll help your final take shine.
  • It might feel a little strange but just be yourself, like you would in any other interview.
  • Stay focused on the camera and remember to smile.
