What's it all about?

Homeopathy is a complementary or alternative medicine (CAM). As a homeopath you'll believe that 'like cures like.' Your work will be based on the idea that a substance that causes symptoms, can also help to relieve symptoms.

Your work will usually involve:

  • discussing a client's symptoms and their wider life
  • explaining remedies to clients
  • choosing, preparing and giving homeopathic remedies
  • keeping client notes
  • offering help with lifestyle issues and everyday stresses
  • encouraging clients to keep in touch with healthcare professionals
  • business administration, if self-employed

It will help if you take a qualification recognised by a professional homeopathy organisation like the Society of Homeopaths (SOH). Courses include:

  • a BSc Hons degree in homeopathy
  • a licentiate diploma from a private college of homeopathy

The SOH has a list of courses.

You can also choose to be part of an accredited register for complementary therapists.

The SOH and the Federation of Holistic Therapists (FHT) both have registers accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Variable

As a self-employed homeopath, your income will depend on the hours you work and the number of clients you see. You'll usually charge an hourly rate of £40 to £100.

These figures are a guide.

Most homeopaths are self-employed. You’ll choose your own working hours, but you may need to offer evening and weekend appointments to meet the needs of your clients.

You may work from your own home, or from an alternative therapy clinic. You may also visit patients in their homes.
With experience you could move into teaching homeopathic courses. You could also work in journalism, specialising in complementary therapies.

You may decide to work in the manufacture of homeopathic remedies and products.
