What's it all about?

You’ll find leaks in the water distribution network, to reduce wastage through damaged pipes. 

You’ll carry out planned surveys and respond to emergencies.

Your day-to-day duties could include:

  • inspecting customers' water supply
  • monitoring water system leakage
  • attaching leakage detection equipment to pipes
  • measuring and recording water pressure and flow
  • listening for sounds that might indicate a leak
  • notifying repair teams

There are no set entry requirements.

Experience in construction, plumbing, building services engineering or plant maintenance may be useful.



You may need a driving licence for some jobs.



You could get into this job through an apprenticeship.

Variable

You’ll usually work shifts and be on a standby rota for out-of-hours emergencies.

Overtime may be available.



You’ll work outside in all weather conditions, sometimes underground inside water pipes. 



Conditions may be wet and dirty.

With experience, you could become a leakage data analyst, team leader or leakage manager. 

With further training and study, you could become an engineering technician or an incorporated water engineer.
