Apprenticeships - earn while you learn

Why choose an apprenticeship?

Apprenticeships are a great way to launch a career. Over 90% of Weston College apprentices are taken on to a permanent contract at the end of their apprenticeship. You will also:

  • Receive a nationally-recognised qualification
  • Earn a salary
  • Receive paid holidays
  • Learn job-specific skills
  • A route to a degree-level qualification.

Apprenticeships are work-based training programmes which give you the skills, knowledge, experience and a nationally-recognised qualification.

You will develop the majority of your skills and knowledge in the workplace, working alongside experienced and skilled staff. In some cases, you will also have the opportunity of attending ‘off-the job’ training sessions at one of our local training centres.

And you can be confident you'll receive the best possible training. In December 2013, the College was rated 'Outstanding' following a rigorous inspection by Oftsed. The outstanding grade relates to every area of the College's education programme and means we are officially one of the highest-performing colleges in the country.

What qualifications are included in an apprenticeship?

There are three levels of apprenticeships:

Intermediate apprenticeships

  • These are Level 2 programmes aimed at entry level job roles
  • Typical programme length is 12 months.

They include a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ)-type qualification at Level 2, an English, Maths and, in some cases, IT refresher course (functional skills) and a clutch of small employment relevant qualifications. A theory qualification - called a technical certificate - is sometimes combined into the NVQ.

Advanced apprenticeships

  • These are Level 3 programmes aimed at more technically competent staff or those with enhanced responsibilities within their role.
  • Typical programme length is 12 to 18 months

Like intermediate apprenticeships, they include a NVQ-type qualification at Level 3 and the functional skills at a higher level. Most have a theory qualification, called a technical certificate, and is sometimes combined into the NVQ.

Higher Apprenticeships

  • These are university-level programmes at Level 4 or 5. They are aimed at more technically competent staff or those with enhanced responsibilities within their role.
  • Typical programme length is 18 to 36 months.

Like the other apprenticeships they include a NVQ type qualification and a theory-based qualification.

Who can do an apprenticeship?

Apprenticeships are open to people aged 16 years and over who:

  • are employed
  • are not doing a course elsewhere
  • meet UK residency requirements
  • are not graduates (or holders of other Level 4 or above qualifications).
